Dr. Ronald Binetter graduated in Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 1981. He then spent 5 years in specialist ophthalmic training at Sydney Eye Hospital and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 1990 and the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1991.
After a year as a Research Associate in Ophthalmology at St.Vincent's Hospital he was appointed as a Clinical Assistant in Ophthalmology.At the same time he became a Visiting Medical Officer at Goulburn Base Hospital and a clinical examiner in Ophthalmology for the Civil Aviation Authority. In 1995 he was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer in Ophthalmology at St.Vincent's Hospital.
In the early 1990's a revolution in cataract surgery occurred with the introduction of phacoemulsification.Cataract surgery transitioned from traditional large incision surgery to small incision surgery.
Dr Binetter was one of the earliest surgeons to adopt this new technology.He routinely used small incision, sutureless cataract surgery combined with the implantation of foldable intraocular lenses years before it was popularized.He helped pioneer sutureless surgery and foldable lenses.
Then in 1995, with the emergence of the Excimer Laser and Laser Eye Surgery, Dr Binetter travelled to the USA where he was one of the first Ophthalmologists in Australia to be certified to perform LASIK.
In 1996 he established a Laser Eye Surgery Centre.This centre now known as the Cataract Clinic, specialises in Cataract Surgery and Laser Eye Surgery. It incorporates the finest available laser technology and vision correction treatments.
Dr Binetter is one of the most experienced Cataract and Implant and Laser Eye surgeons in Australia. He has performed over 10,000 Cataract and Implant procedures and over 20,000 Laser Eye Surgery procedures.
He is a founding member of the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and holds memberships to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
